Types of Industry in Canada: primary, secondary, tertiary

Primary Industries: aka extraction industries, primary industries take raw materials from the natural environment (agriculture, forestry, mining, oil, gas)
- These materials must happen first, before any other industry can come into effect
- Located in parts of Canada where the resources are found naturally
- Large portion of Canada’s income is directly dependent on primary industries
- Primary Manufacturing: taking iron, ore, coal, limestone, and other metals (all products of primary industry) to make a new product (steel)
- Secondary Manufacturing: taking the results of primary manufacturing and using it to create a finished product (steel is used to help create a car/fridge/nails/skate blades etc.)
- These industries are spread across the country, but the majority are found in towns and cities
- These industries provide the money to support the local economy, and without them there’d be no money entering the town
- Survival and growth of a town depends on the number of basic jobs
- These industries do not bring new money into the local economy, but instead recycle the money already inside the economy
