Act III Scenes i and ii
Scene i
THE FIGHT!!
Mercutio and Benvolio are discussing the weather and the heat, and Benvolio suggests going indoors to avoid any confrontations with Capulets. Mercutio accuses Benvolio of being tempramental, saying he is as likely to start a fight as anybody else. They argue for a bit, then Tybalt enters the scene and addresses the two. Mercutio begins taunting Tybalt and provoking him into a fight, but before anything progresses Romeo enters. Tybalt and Romeo exchange words, and when Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt, Mercutio steps up instead. Romeo attempts to intervene and Mercutio is fatally stabbed. Romeo, enraged by the death of his close friend, fights and kills Tybalt, before running off. The Prince enters the scene, and declares Romeo banished from Verona.

Scene ii
Juliet is excited that she and Romeo are married, and is wishing for the nighttime when they can be together again. The Nurse comes in and begins frantically talking about the events from the previous scene, yet she is flustered and isn't specific about what happened. Juliet at first fears that Romeo is dead, and becomes upset with the Nurse for not being able to explain the events to her. Eventually Juliet understands, and is at first upset with Romeo, but when her Nurse also attacks Romeo's name Juliet becomes defensive, and regrets that she spoke ill of her husband. The Nurse assures Juliet that she knows where Romeo is hiding, and promises to bring him to her that night.

Things to keep in mind while we're reading this section:
- The play doesn't describe the fight much besides "they fight," so keep in mind how it might be portrayed in a film or an actual live play
- How would you direct the scene if you were portraying it?
- How do Romeo and Mercutio reactions differ to the unfortunate events?

Things to keep in mind while reading:
- What is Juliet planning to do before she finds out that the Nurse will bring Romeo to her that night?
- Where does Juliet's alliance lie?
